Sophie is a married woman and deeply in love with her husband, but attempts to suicide because of his infertility. Within this case, as a successful figure, he could be seen as a materialism representation including his big suburb house and car and so on, then the limited love that her husband gives to Sophie reveals a one way love at the beginning which is Sophie who contributes more in this relationship. So as the plot sets the unlucky situation of this couple, Sophie tries to seek a way of solving this problem, then she accidentally meets Jihah and the story goes on. it would be another scenario if Sophie lived in a penthouse apartment in the middle of the city which could not lead the story, let Sophie choose to have business with Jihah, and they likely will never meet, since the class difference does not exist in that case. At timestamp 25:45 to 29:26 in the film, the shots including the appearance of the apartment and the relationship between two protagonists seem to be dark, calm, and unfamiliar. The mise-en-scene here established a sense to the viewers which they feel about a big difference and contrast between two protagonists’ financial state and living conditions, which adds on some realistic elements out of the romanticism being portrayed as a melodrama. Thus, the thematics would change entirely if this setting is different, and that would not fit with the initial message that Kim wanted to deliver. If it changed, the story would be a relationship between two people in the same class, and the woman tried to solve the problem of pregnancy in order to make her husband happy, but discovered this secret love by her husband. The plot would be ordinary and many elements often used as mise-en-scene could not be expressed properly in this case. Therefore, the mise-en-scene in the film is extremely important and meaningful.
